This notice says what this website records about you, why, for how long, and what you can do about it. It describes what the site does today.
The short version
- The site records what it needs to work. It shows no advertising, carries no trackers from other companies, and never sells or rents anything it knows about you.
- Your journal is encrypted in our database, and no screen in the site's administration shows it.
- You can download everything held about you, and delete your account, from your Account page, without asking anyone.
Who we are
AA Solis Knowledge runs this website and decides how your data is used. We are based in the United Arab Emirates. To reach us about your data, use the Contact page or write to aasolisknowledge110@gmail.com.
What is recorded, and why
When you only visit
Our own visitor statistics record, for each page you open: the page, the time, how long it was in view, the website that sent you here, the kind of device (phone, tablet or computer), the page's language, and whether you were signed in (yes or no, never who).
To count visits without knowing visitors, the server mixes your network (IP) address and your browser's name with a secret that changes every day, and keeps only the scrambled result. The address itself is not kept in the statistics. The detailed records are deleted after 90 days; only totals remain.
If your browser sends the Global Privacy Control signal, nothing about your visit is recorded.
When you create an account
- Your email address, which is how you sign in. There are no passwords: each sign-in uses a code sent to your inbox. We keep only a scrambled form of each code, and erase it within a day or so.
- The name you choose to show, and, only if you add them, a short text about yourself and your birthday.
- Your language.
- If sign-in with Google is offered and you use it, Google tells us your email address and an account number. Nothing else.
While you are signed in, the site keeps a record of each session: your network address and your browser's name. This lets you sign out of your other devices and lets misuse be traced.
Your path
If you are signed in, the site notes which articles, episodes and passages you finished and the time you spent attentive on them. From this it works out your Knowledge Score, your rank, and the topics you return to, which it uses to choose your daily passage.
You can switch this recording off, or erase what was recorded, in Account, My path. The team can see your rank and your totals. They cannot see what you read.
Guidance
The words you type into Guidance are used to find a passage and are then discarded; they are not stored. If you are signed in, the site keeps which passages it showed you, so that it does not repeat them and you can find them again. To keep the daily limits, the site counts requests; for visitors without an account that count is tied to a scrambled form of the network address and lasts one day.
Saved things and your journal
What you save is kept until you remove it. Your journal entries are encrypted before they are stored. Entries that have reached their time limit are deleted every night.
Messages and the contact form
A message you send to the team is read by the team so that it can be answered. The contact form asks for a name, an email address and your message. When the team answers a signed-in reader, the email you receive carries a link, not the words of the answer.
The newsletter
If you subscribe, we keep your email address and language. An address is added only after its owner opens the link in the confirmation email; a request nobody confirms is deleted after 30 days. Unsubscribing deletes the address from the list.
Payments
Membership payments, when they are open, are handled by PayPal. Your card or bank details are entered on PayPal's own pages and never reach this site. We keep the PayPal subscription number, the amounts, the dates and the state of each payment, so that you receive your membership and your receipts.
Security records
To protect the site and the people who use it, the server records failed sign-ins and blocked requests with the network address they came from, and keeps a log of every action taken by the team. Deleting your account is written to that log as an account number, without your name, your email address or your network address.
Who else is involved
We use a small number of companies to run the site. Each receives only what its task needs.
- Hostinger hosts the website and its database.
- Google (Gmail) delivers our emails: sign-in codes, confirmations, receipts and answers.
- PayPal takes payments, when payments are open.
- YouTube (Google), only when you press play on an episode. Until then nothing is loaded from YouTube. Once you press play, the player loads from YouTube's privacy-enhanced address and YouTube learns your network address and what you watch.
- Cloudflare, only where a check that you are a person is shown on a form.
These companies may process data outside the United Arab Emirates. We do not give your data to anyone else, unless the law requires it.
How long things are kept
- Your account and what belongs to it: until you delete it.
- Sessions: 30 days after you last used them.
- Detailed visitor statistics: 90 days.
- Unconfirmed newsletter requests: 30 days.
- Receipts: for as long as accounting rules require, and after an account is deleted they are kept without it.
- Security records and the team's action log: for as long as they are useful for protecting the site.
- Backups: an encrypted copy of the database is made every night and the server keeps the last 14. Once a week one encrypted copy is also sent to our own mailbox, so that a copy exists away from the server. Something you delete can remain inside these copies until they are replaced or removed. The copies are used only to recover the site after a failure.
Your rights
Under the United Arab Emirates Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on the Protection of Personal Data, you may ask us to:
- give you a copy of your data, in a form you can take elsewhere;
- correct what is wrong;
- delete your data;
- stop or limit what we do with it;
- stop sending you the newsletter.
Most of this you can do yourself. On your Account page you can change your details, download everything held about you, and delete your account and everything tied to it. Every newsletter carries a link that unsubscribes you with one press.
For anything else, write to us through the Contact page. We will answer as soon as we reasonably can. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you may complain to the UAE Data Office.
